They were not mere furnitures in the movie catapulting Lio towards his resolution. The characters of Lio’s mom, sisters, father and co-workers, even his one night stands have their own stories, their own lives. He lived with his flighty mother Elly (Agot Isidro) and younger sister Lexy (Barbara Ruaro), and lately, his long-estranged father (Teroy Guzman) is trying reach out to him to reconnect. He shows how a person who is deemed strange by most just struggles to be normal, deals with family issues, tries to be the good son, and tries harder to be a good boyfriend.
He was this stoic, secretive guy who said little and struggled to keep his emotions in. Though, he was relatable despite his condition. Lio was an introvert and a cynic, characteristics his condition gave him since he developed it as a child. A personal connection between us and the film is easily made, and we do get to latch onto it so tightly as its individual characters’ personal drama is unraveled. So much so that throughout the entire film, we are enabled to think, feel, and act like him. Translating to something resembling blurriness in one’s vision or one’s dissonance from the world he’s navigating, we are immediately tossed into the headspace of Lio. This allows you to experience face blindness first-hand, with the faces of people around Lio literally looking different in the next minute. Direk Ruiz even made a clever decision to use different actors for important characters to provide a more palpable sense of confusion. It can even be accused of taking a page off of Manic Pixie Dream Girl films, where the brooding male lead character gets taught to embrace life’s adventures by a flighty and quirky girl.ĭirector (and co-writer) Joel Ruiz takes conscious effort in giving the audience an emotional and stressful outlook from Lio’s perspective. The beauty of this film is not really hinged on the novelty of its story - it’s a fairly standard boy-meets-girl, boy-learns-of-girl’s-not so pleasant-past, boy-gets-insecure, boy-asserts-masculinity-and-abruptly-repudiates girl, boy-realizes-he-has-lost-good-person-and-woos-girl-back narrative. His life gets complicated when he meets and eventually falls hard for Shana, played by Rhian Ramos, a carefree barista bent on turning a new leaf in life. But how it affects his life, including his own job, shall be revealed in the story. Is it possible to live a normal life if you have prosopagnosia? Lio, played by JM de Guzman, tried to live his life like a normal person does. Sure, you can fall and stay in love with someone unattractive, but can you stay in love with a face that is ever changing? Kung Paano Siya Nawala examines whether a romantic relationship with a prosopagnosic can survive, and if true love can transcend physical appearances. The proper medical term of this condition is “prosopagnosia.” This was defined as a brain disorder characterized by the inability to recognize faces, unrelated to vision, memory or learning dysfunctions.
